Met Office warning of 'very high' UV levels as temperatures soar

People are being urged to protect themselves against the sun as UV levels soar in the hot weather.

Temperatures are set to rise into the mid twenties today (Sunday) with people expected to soak up the sun at beaches, parks and in their gardens.

The Met Office has warned that UV levels will be one away from the highest level on the scale, today and that people should avoid staying outside for long periods of time, especially during the midday sun.

The UV forecast for the south today shows UV levels to be 'Very High' on the scale, with a figure of 8.

The rest of the UK's levels stand at 'High', reaching around 6 or 7 when the sun is at its highest in the sky.

The Met Office says: "The UV index does not exceed 8 in the UK (8 is rare; 7 may occur on exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks towards the end of June).

"Indices of 9 and 10 are common in the Mediterranean area."

The Met Office is advising people to check the forecast regularly and during the hot weather to wear lightweight, light coloured clothing.

People should also spend time in the shade and use a high factor sun cream with good UVA protection.

The pollen forecast for the South West of England shows 'Very High' pollen until Wednesday (June 3) at the earliest.

The weather is set to stay fair over the next few days before more unsettled conditions move in.

Most areas will remain dry and clear tonight while Monday will be another warm day with plenty of sunshine.

It will remain warm and sunny on Tuesday before heavy showers are expected in the south on Wednesday.
