Met Office warning of very high UV as heatwave arrives in the South West

The Met Office has issued a warning after very high UV levels have been forecast throughout the heatwave that has arrived in the UK this weekend.

The levels of UV are set to reach a maximum of eight across the region on the next few days across temperatures could hit the 30C mark in parts of the South West.

On the UV index scale, levels of eight are considered very high and potentially dangerous if exposed to for too long and sunscreen has been strongly advised,

A Met Office forecast for the next few days summed it up as "hot and sunny" as the hottest weekend of the year gets underway.

Alex Deakin a Meteorologist for Met Office started the weekend forecast with a cautionary note and said: "UV levels will be high or very high so you will need sunscreen on if you're out this weekend."

UV radiation is essential for the production of vitamin D, however, too much exposure can cause serious effects on your skin and eyes.

The radiation can cause sunburn when exposed for too long which damages the DNA in your skin cells and often can't be fully repaired by the body's defence system.

This can lead to gradual skin ageing over the years and potentially skin cancer.
