Met Office warn of flooding as 800-mile wide Atlantic storm set to bring 48 hours of downpours

Brace yourself for a washout as the North East prepares for 48 hours of downpours.

An 800-mile wide Atlantic storm front that will bring heavy rain, the chance of thunder and lightning, and strong wind gusts is on the way to the UK - and our region will not escape its wrath.

After a cold and disappointing bank holiday weekend , more wet and windy weather is in the forecast on Wednesday and Thursday.

The jet stream will bring low pressure across the country, with a warning possible on Wednesday night for surface water flooding.

Thunderstorms could also arrive along with the deluge expected midweek.

Met Office forecaster Becky Mitchell said: "Over the last few days although we have had some showers, there will soon be an awful lot of rain.

"We are going to see some highly persistent rain in the North East."

Looking to Wednesday, she said: "Heavy rain is going to arrive quite quickly in the morning, with heavy bursts of rain at rush hour.

"Rain's going to linger through much of the day, and we are getting some strong winds in the forecast.

"Gusts of around 30-35mph around the coast means it will be quite blustery."

She added that temperatures around Newcastle could plunge to 4C and it will feel "quite bitter".

Ms Mitchell said the weather would start to make an improvement by the weekend.

"At the weekend, there will be a mixture of sunshine and showers.

"It will be a little bit milder with temperatures up to double figures."

The weather marks a huge change from the Easter bank holiday weekend, when the North East enjoyed a blast of heat with temperatures in the mid-20s.
