Met Office verdict on arctic freeze as storms and heavy showers to hit next month

After a month of arctic cold weather and snow, the next few weeks look set for more sunny spells mixed with some heavy showers and gales as we head into February.

The temperatures are normal for this time of year however Monday (January 30) will see cloudy skies and occasional rain or drizzle in the south. In the north, the sun will make an appearance bringing with it some showers and wind which extends southerly throughout the day.

From Wednesday (February 8), the Met Office reports periods of prolonged rainfall or heavier showers and wind to the north, with the risk of gales. But in the south, Brits can expect to remain mostly dry. The weather will bring both mild and cool temperatures with a risk of frost remaining.

Meteorologists say from Thursday, February 9 the changeable weather conditions could bring heavy rainfall, particularly in the north and west. While the south and east are expected to see light rain with drier and brighter spells.

But this may not last long as more unsettled conditions approach as we head further into the month. Although temperatures are expected to be slightly above average there is a risk of overnight frost and freezing fog. Although a brief colder spell remains possible.
