Met Office upgrades wind warning in Wales to amber as Storm Francis floods roads and houses

The weather warning for wind in Wales has been upgraded to amber as Storm Francis batters the country.

High winds are set to move in after overnight torrential rain caused severe flooding in parts of the country.

The highest gust so far has been 61mph recorded at Mumbles Head on Gower, but winds of up to 70mph are set to hit all parts of the country later today. Live updates here.

The amber warning states: "A spell of very strong winds will develop across much of Wales and a large swathe of central England during Tuesday before easing from the west during Tuesday evening.

"Gusts are likely to widely reach 50-55 mph inland with some sites seeing 60-65 mph. Exposed coastal locations in the west and some higher ground inland may see gusts to 70 mph at times."

The amber warning is from 2pm until 10pm on Tuesday and covers most of Wales.

On Tuesday morning, fire crews had to rescue 30 people and two dogs from a flooded campsite at St Clears in Camarthenshire.

Conditions on roads around Wales were also difficult on Tuesday morning with flooding reported on several roads in the Neath Port Talbot area and reports firefighters are dealing with flooding in Neath, Whitland, Tonyrefail and Llanelli.

Train services between Swansea and Bridgend were also suspended because of flooding at Neath, and between Abercynon and Aberdare after a tree fell on the line.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Storm Francis will bring another spell of very wet and windy weather during Tuesday and early Wednesday.

"Total rainfall accumulations are expected to reach 20 to 40 mm widely across the area, whilst over hills larger totals are likely with as much as 60-80 mm in a few places."

Temperatures are expected to drop as the week progresses and the forecast for the rest of the week is unsettled, with showers and sunny spells.
