Met Office upgrades thunderstorm weather warning as UK set to be hit by floods

Severe weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office as more thunderstorms and flash flooding are set to strike.

The upgraded weather warning to amber covers parts of Scotland between Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh.

The amber warning could mean heavy rain, flash flooding and lightning strikes. And the east of Scotland will be bracing themselves for road closures, delays on the roads and to public transport.

The deep and fast floodwater can also pose a threat to life, the Mirror has reported.

In the UK, the south of England could see temperatures reaching as high as 36C with some localised flooding in other parts of the country.

The rest of the UK will remain on the yellow alert, until Friday when temperatures are set to go cooler.

Storms are expected in the north-west, north Wales and the West Midlands for Wednesday and Thursday.

Chief meteorologist Steve Ramsdale at the Mer Office said there is set to be "exceptional rainfall totals could be seen of 60 millimetres in an hour with a very small chance of 150 millimetres of rainfall in three or four hours," in those areas.

Environment Agency flood alerts and soaring temperatures

There are five flood alerts in place for areas around Birmingham.

London's temperatures are expected to reach 36C, with places including Cambridge, Yeovil and Southampton expecting to see temperatures reaching the mid-30s.

Hot and humid conditions are expected in most of the UK and heavy showers have been predicted until Friday.
