Met Office updates yellow weather warning in place this weekend as 70mph winds are expected

A weather warning in place this weekend has been updated by the Met Office.

The yellow warning for wind was set to be in place from Friday evening but is now restricted to just Saturday.

It will be in place from 3am until 6pm and affects all areas of the region including Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, Durham, Sunderland and North and South Tyneside.

The gusts are expected to reach up to 70mph in some areas and could cause potential travel disruption.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Strong southwesterly winds are expected, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph likely, perhaps 70 mph over the highest routes.

"Northwest Scotland has been removed from the warning - winds are now expected to fall just short of causing impacts. The warning for the remaining areas has been restricted to Saturday, and slightly adjusted in terms of area."

What to expect

  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • Some delays to road, rail, and air transport are likely
