Met Office updates yellow weather warning for Storm Agnes in Scotland

A YELLOW weather warning for rain has been updated for west and central Scotland and parts of Aberdeenshire.

Gusts of 65-70 mph have already been recorded in southwest Ireland has Storm Agnes heads for Scotland and the UK.

The storm could cause power cuts, blow tiles from roofs and disrupt railways and roads, the Met Office has warned on its website.

The Met Office previously issued a warning for rain associated with Storm Agnes from 12pm. The updated warning is from 3pm on Wednesday until 3am on Thursday

A yellow wind weather warning from midday on Wednesday to 7am on Thursday is in place, stretching across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The warning updated on Wednesday morning states: "A period of heavy rain during Wednesday afternoon and evening may cause some flooding in a few places."

Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer, some bus and train services will likely be affected, "with the chance of the odd road closure", and flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible.

The Met Office also shared satellite imagery on social media showing clouds associated with the Storm visible from space.

Stein Connelly from Transport Scotland said: “Storm Agnes is the first storm of the year and it’s expected to bring some disruption to the transport network, so we’d ask people who are looking to travel to plan their journeys ahead of time.

“Traffic Scotland will have regular updates on the trunk road network on it’s webpage - my.trafficscotland.org – and via its Twitter/X account, including details of ‘wind based’ closures for the major bridges around the country.

“The conditions could also lead to disruption on other modes of transport, so if you’re planning to travel by train, ferry or air, you should check with your operator to see if your service is affected.”
