Met Office truth about 'Spanish plume' bringing Bank Holiday heatwave

This bank holiday weekend, temperatures in Merseyside will soar to a balmy 20C.

The warm weather will bring with it sunny intervals - perfect for those who are lucky enough to have gardens.

Today (April 8), will be a mainly dry day with sunny spells with any early low cloud burning back to the coast.

And tomorrow will be very warm, as the North West is set to scorch.

But recent stories have claimed the temperature rise was linked to a "Spanish plume", which is a weather pattern that brings an increased risk of thunderstorms as warm air travels from Iberia, reports Cornwall Live.

However, the Met Office has said that the weather on its way to the UK is not linked to this type of pattern.

Senior press officer Nicola Maxey said: "The higher temperatures and the chance of thundery showers on Friday and Saturday are not the result of a Spanish plume.

"A Spanish plume is a very specific meteorological set up and while it looks like this may occur over Biscay and Southern France currently these conditions are not expected to extend towards the UK.

"The potential for thundery showers is the UK is triggered by the high temperatures."

The weather will take a turn for the worst on Sunday as temperatures take a significant drop.
