Met Office thunderstorm warning - nine-hour risk of extreme weather today

Another severe weather warning has been issued for thunderstorms across much of the South West, including Bristol, Somerset and parts of Gloucestershire.

The Met Office has issued the yellow alert from noon to 9pm today (Monday, August 9), saying heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause flooding and travel disruption in a few places.

Drivers have been warned about spray on roads with parts of the M5 and M4 in the warning zone.

According to the latest forecasts, Yeovil in Somerset could see a thunderstorm from 1pm until 2pm; Bristol from 3pm until 4pm, and Stroud in Gloucestershire from 8pm until 9pm.

The Met Office has told people what to expect

The thunderstorm warning zone (Met Office)
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

The Met Office's chief forecaster added: "Heavy, slow-moving, thundery downpours will develop today. Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 10-20 mm rain may fall in a short space of time, perhaps with 20-40mm over 2 or 3 hours in a few places.

"The showers will die out during the evening."
