Met Office thunderstorm warning for parts of Wales

A warning of heavy showers and thunderstorms has been issued for parts of Wales on Sunday.

The Met Office yellow warning says that between 20 and 30mm of rain could fall in some parts of the country.

It states: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out from late morning on Sunday, perhaps becoming quite widespread during the afternoon.

"Some places will miss the worst of these, but where they do occur, 20 to 30mm rain could fall in a short space of time leading to some surface water flooding. Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will only slowly ease during the evening and some could persist well into the night."

The warning is in place from 10am on Sunday until midnight and covers these areas of Wales:

  • Conwy
  • Denbighshire
  • Flintshire
  • Wrexham

Large parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are also covered by the warning and more bad weather is forecast for Monday.

Met Office forecaster Matt Taylor said: "There will be a bright start but heavy showers will develop more widely in the afternoon on Sunday, but some areas will avoid the showers altogether staying dry with temperatures in the low 20s.

"Where they do hit, they are likely to be torrential. Monday will start with rain and showers in the north of the UK. It will be brighter for a time in the south, but we are set to see another batch of wet, but this time increasingly windy, weather arrive later on Monday, that could bring us some problems on Monday night."

Weather for your area by postcode:

Welsh weather forecaster Derek Brockway said: "Low pressure over the Atlantic turning it more unsettled. Showers or longer spells of rain, heavy and thundery but some bright or sunny intervals in the mix.

"Next week changeable and unsettled - not great for holidaymakers!"
