Met Office thunder warning issued as epic storm set to hit Leeds

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as thunderstorms look likely to hit Leeds on Monday.

The warning covers much of the UK and the majority of Yorkshire. It will come into force at 6am on Monday (August 15) and follows an amber heat warning that has been issued for parts of south Leeds over the weekend.

Despite the upcoming bad turn in weather, the rain is sure to be a welcome sight to many and is set to arrive just days after Yorkshire Water confirmed a hosepipe ban would definitely be enforced across the county. The Met Office has warned the thunderstorms will bring 'locally heavy rain and possible disruption'.

The yellow thunderstorm warning will come to an end in Leeds at just before midnight on Monday. It means there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded 'quickly' while spray and heavy rain could lead to difficult driving conditions throughout the day.

A Met Office spokesman said: "While some places will avoid them, thunderstorms are likely to develop increasingly widely as we go through Monday. Storms will probably already be underway for Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland by early Monday, before also developing across parts of England and Wales by late morning and into the afternoon.

"Storms should begin to ease from the west later. Very locally 20-30 mm of rain is possible in an hour, and up to around 50 mm in three to six hours. Hail and frequent lightning are also possible."
