Met Office storm warning with 'torrential downpours' imminent

A weather warning has been issued for South West today - with ‘torrential downpours’ and thunderstorms on the way.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, which runs until 11pm today, for heavy showers, torrential downpours and thunderstorms.

The warning covers the Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire areas.

Forecasters say the inclement weather may cause disruption to train and bus services and flooding.

And they have added there is a chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly with damage to properties from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds.

Where the storms are at their worst there could also be power cuts and difficult driving conditions.

A Met Office spokesman said: “It will be mostly dry to start, with some bright spells.

“Scattered showers across the region throughout the afternoon, with some becoming heavy, and isolated thunder likely.”

The weather warning comes at the same time as forecasters say conditions are set to improve by the middle of a month, with some predicting a heatwave later in August.
