Met Office shares exact dates of big September weather shift

The Met Office has revealed the exact dates when the UK is predicted to see a big shift into storms and more autumnal weather.

The weather organisation has released the long range forecast for September and it seems that summer could be a distant dream.

The first half of the month is likely to see heavy rain, wind and thunderstorms, but temperatures could still be above average for the time of year.

The unsettled theme is likely to continue through the middle of the month, with rainfall expected to be "above average".

However it's not all bad news with a "weak indication" of drier spells later in the month.

Here's what the Met Office are forecasting for September, with the autumnal conditions expected to start on September 5.

Met Office forecast for September 5 - September 14

With a region of low pressure residing close to UK at the start of next week, there will most likely be unsettled conditions for many areas, although confidence is low regarding the nature of this regime.

Showers or longer spells of rain are likely, but some drier and brighter interludes are still expected. Rather windy at times, breeziest in the northwest.

Further out, some places could see heavy rain at times, particularly in western and northwestern areas, although showers, and potentially thunderstorms, may also affect other areas in a more localised fashion.

Still, some more settled interludes are expected, most likely in the southeast.

Temperatures are likely to fluctuate around average through this interval, but a brief spell of warm conditions giving way to a cooler period remains possible.

Met Office forecast for September 15 - September 29

Confidence is relatively low during this period, as is usual for September, in part due to tropical storm activity across the Atlantic, which can significantly affect weather at the mid-latitudes.

Currently, the evidence points towards the unsettled theme being likely to continue through the middle of the month, with a weak indication of possible drier conditions late in September.

Therefore, rainfall is expected to be above average at first, with the chance of it easing and trending towards or drier than average later.

Following this pattern, temperatures are expected to fluctuate around average in the middle of the month, with some occasional warm spells - these more likely in the southeast, and perhaps more widely towards the end of the month.
