Met Office say sunshine set to return after Liverpool battered by heavy rain

Liverpool was battered by rain on Tuesday, with a month's worth of rain falling in just one day.

Flooding caused chaos in some parts of Merseyside, with roads such as Queens Drive closed because of the excessive rainfall.

The River Alt also burst its banks, closing The Kirkby Centre and Kirkby Gallery and Library.

But the good news is that the bad weather is set to ease overnight - leaving a dry and sunny day on Wednesday.

Tuesday night will see rain showers ease off after 7pm, leaving a largely dry night.

And Wednesday will be dry all day, with sunny spells and highs of 17 degrees predicted.

However Thursday sees the rain return to our shores for the following few days - with more torrential rain predicted on Sunday, alongside thunderstorms.

The Met Office forecast for the North West said: "Rain in Manchester and Merseyside will soon die away to leave a mainly dry, mild but cloudy night. Rain will take longer to clear from Lancashire, and although it will become lighter in Cumbria, it may continue here. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

"On Wednesday the region will start rather cloudy with occasional rain, mainly in Cumbria. Sunny spells will develop in the afternoon, perhaps triggering the odd shower further south. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

"The next few days will be windy with frequent heavy and possibly thundery showers. On Saturday, winds will probably ease, but showers are still likely."
