Met Office's disappointing August heatwave update in new forecast

August may have only just begun, but the Met Office has issued a disappointing forecast for the rest of the month.

July saw soaring temperatures and wall to wall sunshine for several weeks in Liverpool and beyond.

Rain and storms came at the end of July but the weather in Merseyside this week has so far been fairly sunny and warm.

However the sunny skies look set to disappear from Wednesday afternoon onwards and according to the Met Office they may not return for some time.

There are yellow weather warnings in force for rain today, with another yellow warning for storms in place for Friday.

And the UK long-range forecast doesn't paint a promising picture, with more mixed weather forecast and the North West predicted to see the worst of the rain and wind.

But it's not all doom and gloom as the later half of the month could see "hotter weather with rainfall most likely below average."

Met Office forecast for Sunday August 8 to Tuesday August 17

Sunny spells and showers for many areas at the start of this period, with most frequent showers probably in the north and west.

By the middle of next week there is an increasing likelihood of thicker cloud bringing rain to northwestern areas, together with stronger winds. These more unsettled conditions are likely to spread southeastwards through the latter part of next week.

Beyond this it is likely to remain changeable; confidence is low in terms of detail, but most places will likely see showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed with some drier, more settled periods. Some strong winds are possible at times, especially in the northwest.

Temperatures are most likely to be around average, perhaps warm in the east and southeast.

Met Office forecast for Wednesday August 18 to Wednesday September 1

Although confidence is very low through this period, a continuation of changeable conditions is most likely.

Some more settled weather may develop, particularly towards the north and northeast of the UK.

Temperatures are likely to be above average, with the potential for hotter weather later in the month with rainfall most likely below average.
