Met Office reveals where it could snow in the North East this weekend

Winter is on its way but you may have to wait a little while before it starts snowing.

According to forecasters, the North East could see some snow over the next few days - but this is only likely on high ground such as the Cheviots in Northumberland.

Snow has already arrived in rural areas such as the Pennines but in cities and towns there is still no sign of any snowflakes.

Showers will continue to hit the North East over the next few days and it will feel bitterly cold at times too.

Forecaster Grahame Madge from the Met Office said that snow could fall on higher ground on Thursday and Friday.

He added: "It will not necessarily be at lower levels, there could be snow on the hills.

"Snow at this time of the year is likely not to settle and cause any particular impact.

"It may settle on lawns but it's not going to be a particularly impactful."

For the majority of us, the rainy days are going to continue, with no respite from the showers over the weekend.

Mr Madge added: "It is clear in prospects today.

"There is a chance that showers will start to feed in to north easterly parts overnight.

"Away from those showers there could be a widespread frost.

"Tomorrow there will be intermittent sunshine but there will be some scattered showers off the North East and brighter conditions for the North West.

"Going into the weekend, Saturday is set up to be a similar picture.

"Showers will perhaps be a little more persistent and again there could be some snow in these showers but nothing at lower levels.

"Following that we have got quite a lot of potential for showers at the coast building up along that North East coast."
