Met Office responds to speculation that a new Beast from the East is coming

There has been a lot of speculation around whether another Beast from the East is coming our way this winter.

The memory of the freezing weather, snowstorms and ice that left Glasgow grounded to a halt in February and March of last year.

Scientists have warned that the UK could be set to experience one of the coldest winters in 30 years and see a repeat of the Beast from the East.

However the Met Office has said it is unable to "support a forecast" which predicts the weather that far in advance, as reported by our sister site Lancs Live .

Researchers at University College London believe the UK is set for another bitterly cold winter - like that experienced in 2018 - after studying sea temperatures and air pressure over the North Atlantic.

Predictions say that extreme weather could hit in the coming months with the worst of it expected post-Christmas with record temperature lows in January and February 2020.

The Met Office, however, is reluctant to support these claims.

Met Office spokesperson Bonnie Diamond said: "It is set to get colder as we head into winter, with snow possible in places - as it is every winter.

"We wouldn't support a forecast of a new Beast from the East or below average temperatures this winter this far ahead.

"We can provide a forecast for the next seven days, after that it becomes an outlook.

"The technology doesn't exist to accurately predict the weather that far ahead."

Remembering what the Beast from the East looked like in Glasgow

Few people will have forgotten the Beast from the East which hit Glasgow at the end of February 2018, bringing public transport to a stop, closing schools and creating incredibly treacherous conditions.

What is the Beast from the East?

The phrase 'Beast from the East' was coined as the cold and wintry conditions in the UK resulted from easterly winds from the near continent.

When pressure is high over Scandinavia, the UK tends to experience a polar continental air mass.

When this happens in winter, cold air is drawn in from the Eurasian landmass bringing the cold and wintry conditions that give rise to the 'Beast from the East' moniker.
