Met Office records warmest day of year so far in Wales

The warmest temperatures of 2022 so far have been recorded as Wales basks in spring sunshine. Just before 1pm on Tuesday, March 22, Welsh forecaster Derek Brockway said that the the temperature in Porthmadog, Gwynedd, had exceeded 19°C.

He added: "The highest temperature recorded in Wales so far this year! Cooler on windward coasts. 14°C on Mumbles Head."

The Met Office said it was "feeling very warm" in the spring sunshine, and said a temperature of 18.1°C had been recorded at Heathrow at noon.

The forecasting agency said that temperatures were expected to rise during the afternoon, with highs of 20°C in parts of London.

Porthmadog is often the warmest place in the country. Despite being a coastal town, where temperatures are typically lower, Porthmadog's geography is the reason for the consistently high temperatures as the hills surrounding it provide shelter. Read the more detailed reason why here.

The good weather is set to last the rest of the week in Wales, and could last until the end of the month.

The Met Office forecast for the Wednesday to Saturday in Wales says: "Early haze on Wednesday will soon dissipate to leave a widely sunny and warm day, with lighter winds. The warmest spots are likely to be across parts of west and north Wales. Maximum temperature 19°C.

"High pressure will maintain predominantly fine and settled conditions to end the week. Pleasantly warm by day, but locally chilly overnight. Becoming breezier by the weekend, especially in the south."
