Met Office predicts the exact time snow could hit Britain next week

Snow could hit parts of Britain next week, according to forecasters at the Met Office.

It's believed the cold snap is being caused by a change in the Polar Vortex as people brace for a frosty winter.

People have been warned that snow could fall as early as next Thursday on "mountain tops across Scotland", the Met Office said.

According to a spokesman snow could arrive in the early hours of Thursday, October 21 - and last all day until 10pm, Birmingham Live reports.

John Hammond, former BBC weatherman and meteorologist for Weathertranding, told the Sun : "There is a modest warming taking place in the stratosphere, which will serve to weaken the Polar Vortex and knock it off-kilter over the next week or two."

He added: "After a very mild few days, much colder air will arrive from the north later next week, which may bring some snow to the Scottish mountains.

"That cold spell may not last all that long, but frost, and eventually snow, will probably figure more frequently in our forecasts before too long."

Some parts of the UK will see lows of -3C at night but highs of 18C during the day after winter weather starts creeping its way in during the weekend.

In the North East, while temperatures remain while over the coming week, the Met Office said there will be a few showers some of which could turn thundery.

Towards the end of the month, there will be showery and windy conditions for many and temperatures will fall below average for most increasing the likelihood of snow over higher ground in the north.
