Met Office predicts it could be unseasonably cold May Bank Holiday for the North East

An unseasonably cold May Bank Holiday is on the way for the North East, the Met Office predicts.

It's not quite barbecue weather yet with showers and even overnight frost heading for the region.

The weather will be turning colder at the weekend with strong winds making it feel even chillier.

A meteorologist for the Met Office told us what to expect:

Friday

"It's turning colder and it will be bracing to say the least.

"There'll be strong winds and it won't be feeling especially spring-like but it's not a complete write-off.

"The cold weather will arrive on Friday with a northernly breeze and a few showers. Temperatures will be around 9/10C."

Saturday

"Again, a few showers will come down and there's strong winds coming from the North Sea.

"It will be mostly rain but don't be surprised if there's hail and even thunder.

The first significant rainfall in Newcastle for weeks falls on Northumberland Street (Newcastle Chronicle)

"On the Yorkshire Moors and Northumberland hills, there could be some sleet and snow but it won't stick.

"Temperatures will be no better than 7/8C and the wind will make it feel even colder."

Sunday

"The winds will be a bit lighter on Sunday and there will be fewer showers and more in the way of sunshine.

"Temperatures could reach around 12C."

Monday

"It will be really similar with a few showers around. It won't feel desperately warm but temperatures will be around 11/12C.

"There will also be some sharp frost for this time of year overnight on Sunday.

"In Northumberland, temperatures could drop below freezing. However, in Newcastle it will likely stay above freezing.

"It's not exactly the joys of spring."
