The UK's summer heatwave could be broken by thunderstorms in the south of the UK before the hot weather returns.
Met Office forecasts predict the sweltering heatwave will continue today (Monday 19th July) with temperatures set to soar to a high of 32C.
But there is a "low chance" of showers in the south this evening and elsewhere on Tuesday afternoon before the hot weather bounces back.
It will be another humid night, however, with 16C mercury levels making it difficult to sleep for Brits.
The showers would offer a brief respite from the sweltering heat, with highs of 29C expected tomorrow. Highs above 22C are forecast until Saturday.
However, the weekend could see a higher chance of rain and thunder.
A Met Office spokesperson said: "Late Friday into Saturday could see more persistent rain across the southern part of the UK, though it will remain generally dry and fine in the north."
Tens of thousands of people headed for beaches over the weekend with roads busy on coastal routes.
But the heatwave also sparked heat health warnings from the likes of Public Health England and the RAC.

London and South East of England
London can expect a mainly dry day with long periods of sunshine and maximum temperatures of 32C.
However, there is a low chance of isolated heavy showers in the afternoon, mainly in the west.
The South East will be very warm or hot inland and cooler near coasts.
The region will stay dry after dusk with clear skies continuing into the early hours of Tuesday. The night will be mild with a minimum temperature of 16C.
Tuesday will be sunny with some rain in the afternoon but generally very hot with a top temperature of 30C.
South West
The South West will be sunny with a top temperature of 32C. There could be clouds in the afternoon but rain is unlikely.
Bristol and Bath will be sunny all day with a high of 30C
Clear skies will continue in the evening and overnight with light winds and a minimum temperature of 14C.
Tuesday will be much the same but with more of a risk of showers.
East
Cambridge will be dry and sunny with a temperature of 29C.
The region has a low chance of rain in the afternoon.
The evening will be dry and clear though fog could develop in parts of East Anglia. The nigh will be mild at around 15C.
Tuesday will be sunny and hot at 28C with fog clearing, though there is a chance of rain in the afternoon.
Midlands
The West Midlands will see another sunny day with a maximum temperature of 32C.
Clear skies could give way to a sharp and "possibly thundery" shower of rain.
The rain could start in Birmingham at around 6pm. In the East Midlands, Stoke-on-Trent could see showers earlier in the afternoon around 3pm. Temperatures will hit 30C in both.
Nottingham might avoid the rain and enjoy temperatures of 28C.
Yorkshire and the Humber
The region will be dry and bright with some cloud and fog on the coast where it will be cooler.
Sheffield, Doncaster, and Leeds will be 28C and rise to 29C on Tuesday before dropping slightly through the week.
The night will be mild with some fog and lowest temperatures at 13C.
Tuesday will be mainly dry and 27C with some cloud and the risk of showers in the afternoon.
North East
The morning will be bright and sunny at 25C but there will be cloud and fog along the coast that will be slow to clear.
Newcastle will be a sunny 22C while Durham will be the same but with a little cloud.
The night will be clear at 13C but with " mist, fog and low cloud" on the coast.
Tuesday will be much the same and a little warmer with a top temperature of 27C.
North West
Clouds will clear y day following. Some fair-weather cloud will bubble up in the afternoon, and the risk of the odd sharp shower. Feeling hot in the south. Maximum temperature 29 °C.
Liverpool will be a bright and sunny 26C while Manchester will be 29C.
The evening will be clear with some fog and a minimum temperature of 13C.
Tuesday will be fine and dry with plenty of sunshine and temperatures of 30C.
Scotland
Edinburgh will be 22C and clear and sunny, while Glasgow will hit 24C.
The region will see long spells of sunshine with patches of low cloud and mist over the Inner Hebrides and light winds.
The evening will be dry and clear with some mist over some Atlantic coasts and light winds with a minimum temperature of 12C.
Tuesday will be another dry and sunny day in all areas with heat rising to 26C and some cooling sea breezes.
Wales
Today will be sunny with some patches of cloud in the afternoon and the risk of a sharp shower in the east.
Cardiff could see thunder and lightning at around 3pm today, though it will stay hot at 30C.
Wrexham will be 27C with a possible thunderstorm at 5pm.
Clouds will clear in the evening with some fog but warm temperatures above 14C.
Tuesday will be fine, dry and sunny with some cloud and possible showers in the afternoon and top temperatures of 31C.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland can expect "long spells of unbroken sunshine" after clouds pass for hot temperatures of 28C, while cooler on the coast.
Belfast will be 22C, rising to 24C on Tuesday.
The 12C evening across Northern Ireland will be fine and sunny with some low cloud or mist developing along north coast and edging inland overnight.
Tuesday will be dry and hot though with some cooling sea breezes and a maximum temperature of 29C.
However, the Met Office said Northern Ireland could see showers over the weekend similar to those in the south of the UK.
