Met Office on claims Liverpool will have a white Christmas

Reports have suggested the the UK may be about to hit a season of 'blizzards' as temperatures drop in December.

According to some weather experts, the UK could see "some type of 100-year cold or snow records being breached this winter."

And some forecasters have even predicted a ' white Christmas'.

The Met Office long range forecast says that December will start off cold with wintry showers expected.

They said: "The period is likely to begin on the cold side for most regions, with wintry showers at times in the north, and perhaps over high ground in the south.

"Widespread frosts and ice are also likely. There looks to be a change around mid-month to milder conditions, although the timing is very uncertain.

"This change looks likely to bring milder and wetter conditions across most parts of the UK, allowing temperatures to recover to around average, or perhaps slightly above.

"The wettest conditions are likely to be in the north and west, with an increased likelihood of drier spells in the south and southeast. Colder interludes are still possible, mainly in the north."

But what are the chances of that special 'white Christmas'?

The ECHO spoke to the Met Office who said the chance of a snowy winter could not yet be determined.

Similarly, the long-range outlooks are only there to provide an indication for the whole of the UK as to whether it will be colder or warmer and drier or wetter than average.

Only seven days before Christmas Day will forecasters know whether a 'white Christmas' is possible.
