Met Office on chances 'Lucifer' heatwave could cause rise in UK summer temperatures

The Met Office has responded to claims that the European heatwave could push temperatures up in the UK.

Reports that a second summer heatwave will happen at the end of August have been circulating, with many hoping to see an end to wet and grey weather.

While the past week has seen patchy weather with temperatures ranging between 12C and 22C, Netweather's latest graphics reveal temperatures around 28C could arrive in the South East of England by the end of the month.

Italy saw temperatures reach a scorching 48.8C yesterday, which could be a new European record for the hottest temperatures.

Many have been hoping the Lucifer heatwave being experienced in Italy could push temperatures up in the UK.

A Met Office spokesperson has responded to claims of another 'heatwave' and theories on what might happened towards the end of the month.

A Met Office spokesman said: "There is no indication in our forecast of any heatwave in the UK and certainly no indication that the heatwave impacting parts of Europe is going to impact the UK."

"There's been a lot of hyped up media coverage but there's nothing in the forecast to suggest anything more than average or potentially slightly above average temperatures."

What is the long-range forecast - August 26-September 6

"Confidence is very low through this period.

"There are signs that the UK will continue to be under the influence of high pressure with settled weather more likely in the south.

"However, some spells of heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible at times.

"The north of the UK will probably remain changeable and often unsettled.

"Temperatures are likely to be overall near or slightly above average."
