Met Office long range weather forecast means warning for anybody expecting a heatwave this August

The national weather services' latest forecast predicts what weather we can expect to see for the remainder of August.

While it had been speculated that Leeds and Yorkshire, along with the rest of the UK, could spend the last weeks of summer basking in glorious sunshine, from the Met Office's latest weather forecast that doesn't appear to be quite the case.

The agency has a long range forecast for the UK which takes a look at the weather from Sunday August 22 to Tuesday August 31.

Although the forecast states that temperatures will remain "close to" or "rather above" average there is a possibility that rain and showers could develop.

The weather service said: "Confidence is low to start this period, with uncertainties in the details of an area of low pressure which is likely to be in charge. Initially unsettled, particularly in the south, with extensive rain and showers on Sunday.

"Conditions should become more settled into next week, with plenty of dry weather with occasional sunny spells.

"These more settled conditions could remain throughout the week, however rain and showers could develop once again.

"This is most likely towards the south with rain most probably moving in from the west."

It did, however, add that warmer spells could be possible at times.

The Met Office continued: "Winds likely to be light at the start of the period before perhaps increasing through the week, particularly if the unsettled weather arrives from the west.

"Temperatures most likely remaining close to, or rather above average, with warm spells likely at times."

This week:

Meanwhile, for the rest of this week Yorkshire can expect to see a cloudy and possibly rainy week.

The Met office said that from this evening (August 18) there will be clouds with outbreaks of rain or drizzle possible.

Thursday will be generally cloudy with the chance of sunny intervals before the clouds return and bring with them the chance of showers.

For Friday through to Sunday this Met Office said: "Warm Friday, with sunny intervals and variable cloud, thickening later. Rain overnight clearing to showers Saturday, and rather cloudy.

"Uncertain detail Sunday, but likely cloudy with heavy showers or rain."
