Met Office issues yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Bristol

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, with heavy showers forecast throughout the day.

While much of the UK will avoid downpours, the weather service warned bands of thunderstorms will likely bring disruption to some areas today (July 25), including Bristol.

Most of the rain in Bristol is expected to fall throughout the afternoon, with deluges interspersed with dry intervals.

The evening is predicted to be drier with a few sunny spells and temperatures of around 17°C.

On the Met Office website it states: "A cloudy start to the day with showers or longer spells of rain continuing through the day for many.

Driving conditions could be affected by spray (Tom Wren SWNS)

"The showers will be heavy and perhaps thundery in places but sunny spells breaking through the cloud in the afternoon.

"Lingering daytime showers will give some heavy downpours at first in the evening. Turning drier overnight for many with clear periods but still the chance of the odd shower."

What to expect when there's a yellow weather warning

Heavy rain can have an impact on our lives in a number of ways, meaning we need to be more alert when out and about.

The Met Office lists a number of issues that can arise when there's a yellow weather warning in place:

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
  • Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • Delays to train services are possible
