Met Office issues yellow weather warning for severe gales set to hit Wales this weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Wales this weekend as severe gales of up to 70mph are set to hit the country.

A deep area of low pressure, known as Storm Atiyah, is forecast to cross the the United Kingdom on Sunday and Monday, bringing very strong winds to parts of the west. Wales is set to be buffeted by severe gales during the warning, which begins at 3pm on Sunday and lasts until 9am on Monday.

The Met Office says winds inland are expected to gust to 50-60mph and around the coast they could reach 70mph. Large coastal waves are also expected.

Residents from Bangor to Aberystwyth and Cardiff should prepare for delays to road, air, rail and ferry transport. Power cuts and short-term loss of other services is also possible.

The following local authorities fall within the warning area:  Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Vale of Glamorgan.
