Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ice in Greater Manchester this weekend

A weather warning has been issued for ice across Greater Manchester this weekend.

The yellow alert is in place from midnight on Saturday until 11am and covers the whole of England.

The Met Office has warned that icy stretches may lead to some difficult driving conditions and could lead to injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

"Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will clear southwards during the early hours of Saturday, but some showers will affect coastal districts," the warning states.

"Where skies clear, icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces."

It comes as the weather in Greater Manchester continues to be bitterly cold, with parts of the region waking up to even more snow this morning (Friday).

Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside were among the areas to get a covering of snow overnight as temperatures plunged below freezing.

All 10 boroughs have been hit with snowfall periodically since Christmas Day, which has caused much excitement among children and snow-lovers.

The icy conditions have caused some accidents on the roads, with some travel disruption.

North West Motorway Police has today warned drivers to take extra care on the roads, while the A57 Snake Pass has been closed due to snow.

Saturday's Met Office forecast states: "Low cloud in the south at first else plenty of sunshine, but cold. Cloudier across Scotland and Northern Ireland with patchy rain, and some brief snow, before slowly turning milder."

While there is a yellow weather warning in place for Manchester on Saturday, it's still set to be a sunny day with the sun expected to shine from 9am until 4pm.

Temperatures will rise to a maximum of 2C.

There are currently no weather warnings in place for Sunday, January 10.
