Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ice as temperatures plummet overnight

The North East is being told to brace itself for a chilly start to the week as temperatures are set to plummet overnight.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice for the region which will be in place from 8pm on Sunday until 10am on Monday.

Rain is due to hit the area on Sunday afternoon and then temperatures will begin to fall below freezing. Further rain overnight could mean waking up to more icy patches on Monday morning.

The Met Office said: "Following rain on Sunday afternoon surfaces are expected to remain wet into the evening when temperatures will start to fall. With surface temperatures falling below freezing some icy stretches are likely to form, mainly on rural routes and untreated surfaces.

"Some further rain overnight may bring an increased risk of icy stretches for Monday morning."

What to expect

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
