The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice as the North East is battered by torrential rain.

The warning comes as multiple flood alerts have been issued across the region.

High tides and strong winds are expected in rural areas in County Durham and Northumberland.

Around 18,000 Northumberland residents are still without power due to damage caused by Storm Arwen.

The Met Office warns:

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected by ice and perhaps snow, resulting in longer journey times
