Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ice across the North East

A fresh weather warning for ice has been issued for the North East.

The warning has been extended until 10am on Friday as temperatures are set to fall again overnight.

It comes after parts of the region were covered in snow on Thursday, which caused significant travel disruption.

Several roads were forced to close as vehicles and lorries were brought to a standstill unable to move due to the snow.

A statement released by the Met Office said: " Rain, sleet and snow dying out while leaving a risk of icy surfaces and difficult travel conditions.

"A further 1-2 cm of snow is possible in a few places at first, mainly above 200 metres across Scotland, northern and central England, before residual rain, sleet and snow dies out during Thursday evening.

"Ice is then likely to form on some untreated surfaces, with difficult conditions on some roads and pavements by Friday morning."

Last week temperatures plummeted and large parts of the region were left under a blanket of ice and snow.

What to expect

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
