Met Office issues yellow weather warning for heavy showers and thunderstorms across North East

A fresh yellow weather warning for heavy showers and thunderstorms has been issued across the North East.

The warning is in place between 10am and 11.59pm on Sunday after a previous warning was issued throughout Saturday.

It impacts the whole of the region including Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Sunderland and South Tyneside.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, the Met Office said.

This could lead to some delays and cancellations to train and bus services and there is a small chance that some communities could become cut off by flooded roads.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures and there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out from late morning on Sunday, perhaps becoming quite widespread during the afternoon.

"Some places will miss the worst of these, but where they do occur, 20 to 30mm rain could fall in a short space of time leading to some surface water flooding.

"Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will only slowly ease during the evening and some could persist well into the night."

Rainy weather on Saturday means it could be a washout for fans in beer gardens watching England's Euro 2020 quarter-final against Ukraine with the gloomy weather continuing for the rest of the weekend.
