Met Office issues yellow weather warning for heavy rain across North East

Blazing hot sunshine has been replaced by thundery showers as the earlier heatwave has been washed away.

After days of hot weather in the North East and temperatures reaching into the high 20s, the weekend is predicted to be a washout.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering the whole of the North East until 10pm on Saturday.

The new warning came into place just after an overnight thunderstorm warning in the region ended.

Some rumbles of thunder could be heard on Friday evening but the worst of the stormy weather passed by the North East after dropping hailstones in parts of Yorkshire.

However, heavy showers and prolonged rain are forecast throughout Saturday, with a chance of thunder returning.

The showers could bring 10-20 mm of rain per hour for some places during Saturday, with perhaps 30-40 mm over a few hours.

The Met Office forecasters say that public transport could be delayed and some roads could become flooded.

It is a far cry from the heatwave weather experienced by Geordies sunseekers on Wednesday and Thursday when temperatures soared.

However, due to the heatwave weather, many people flocked to beaches around the UK despite the 2m social distancing rules.

This led to the Government threatening that beaches could be closed if the rules weren't followed and coronavirus cases started to rise again.
