Met Office issues yellow weather warning for 9 hours of gales and rain tomorrow

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for nine hours of gales and rain tomorrow.

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected in the afternoon and evening, leading to some disruption to travel.

A warning is in force from 1pm to 10pm tomorrow and covers coastal areas in southern and eastern England.

Delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, the Met Office warned.

There is also a risk of short-term loss of power, as well as spray or flooding on roads.

The Met Office added: "It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves."

A separate yellow warning for rain has also been issued for northern Scotland and will be in force from 4pm tomorrow until 6am on Sunday.

The Met Office warned that some homes may become flooded and transport links could face disruptions.

Today, Brits will be lashed by more torrential downpours, forecasters have warned.

Showers will be heavy and frequent in in the northwest with hail and thunder, whilst southern and eastern parts become largely sunny later in the day.

Coastal gales are expected in exposed areas, forecasters have said.

Meteorologist Clare Nasir said temperatures will remain in double figures in the South and East, but further North they are likely to drop to single figures.

Scotland will be wet and windy today, with rain reaching England and Wales too, Ms Nasir added.

The forecaster said a band of rain is heading towards the South East, meaning that the Midlands will brighten up in the afternoon.

Northern Ireland will also see a few heavy, blustery showers with a chance of thunder.

Winds will be particularly strong in the North West of Scotland, Ms Nasir explained.

By the weekend, the UK is expected to see strong winds of up to 70mph and relentless rainfall that could see 5mm of rainfall an hour in some regions.

Met Office Operational Meteorologist Dan Stroud said Saturday and Sunday will bring "persistent and at times heavy rain likely to move northeast across the UK".

He explained: "Winds strengthening in the south and east late Saturday afternoon and evening with coastal gales, gusting to 60-70mph along the south coast in places.

"The area of organised cloud and rain, locally heavy is expected to clear north and east on Sunday but may persists across the far northeast of Scotland for much of the day were it will remain windy for much of the day, again with coastal gales."

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "Saturday's widespread wet and windy weather sees a 31 milibar drop in the low pressure, classed as rapid cyclogenesis."
