Met Office issues yellow weather warning as UK set to be hit by high winds

A yellow weather warning has been issued as the whole UK prepares for high winds and heavy rain this weekend.

The Met Office has revealed that the country, including the North East, can expect inland gusts of between 50 and 60mph, possibly reaching 80mph in coastal and higher regions in the north.

The warning is expected to be in place between 6pm on Saturday and just before midnight on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Very strong winds are likely across much of the UK later Saturday and through Sunday.

"Gusts of 50mph to 60mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts 70, possibly 80mph around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west.

"Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills. Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west."

The warning is expected to be modified with more detail over the coming days.

It is expected the winds could cause significant disruption to anyone travelling over the weekend.
