Met Office issues yellow weather warning as the North East is set to be battered by heavy rain

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the North East, as heavy rain is set to batter the region.

Rain is expected from the early hours of Saturday morning and it could cause potential flooding to homes and businesses, power cuts and travel disruption.

The warning affects areas in the region including Newcastle , Northumberland, Durham, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside.

It will be in place from 4am on Saturday until midnight.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Following a spell of rain later on Friday, more persistent rain will arrive from the south early on Saturday morning and last through most of the day.

"The rain will be heavy at times, especially on hills. 15 to 25mm is likely to fall quite widely, with 40 to 50mm possible over high ground. The rain will slowly ease and then clear from the south on Saturday evening."

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • Some interruption to power supplies and other services likely
