Met Office issues yellow weather warning as snow falls in parts of the North East

Snow has fallen overnight in parts of the North East as temperatures plummeted.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning predicting heavy snow showers could cause disruption on the roads.

There has been snowfall in areas of County Durham and Northumberland, while North Yorkshire is set to see the worst of it.

In Teesside, police have closed the A174 Apple Orchard Bank due to an articulated lorry and other vehicles becoming stuck in the icy conditions.

The weather warning will be in place until 10am on Sunday.

It reads: "Frequent and at times heavy snow showers will affect the area this morning.

"Snow is most likely to accumulate on roads over the North York Moors, where 2-5 cm of snow is possible within a couple of hours."

What to expect

  • Some roads likely to be affected with longer journey times by road and bus services.
