Met Office issues yellow weather warning as North East set to be blanketed by fog

The North East is set for an unclear start to 2020 as fog is set to descend on the region.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning and says it will form quickly on Tuesday evening and it will linger into the early hours of New Year's Day.

The fog could lead to difficulty travelling and cause some delays.

The warning is in place from 7pm on Tuesday until 3am on Wednesday and affects areas including Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham, Northumberland, Sunderland and North and South Tyneside.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Fog is expected to form quickly during the evening of New Years Eve and persist into the early hours of New Years Day.

"The fog will then lift as cloud increases from the southwest early on New Years Day."
