The alert said: "Areas of fog, some very dense with visibility near 50 metres in places, and currently focused across Cheshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire, seems likely to develop more widely during the coming hours.

"It is uncertain at this stage whether the same areas will be affected during the Monday morning peak travel period."

The Met Office said the during the night the north west would see a mixture of cloud and clear spells with patchy mist and fog forming through the early hours.

Periods of light rain and drizzle will arrive across Cumbria during the early hours, spreading south overnight.

It will feel chilly in place with temperatures falling to a minimum of 5C.

Monday is said to be a drab day with mist and fog slowly lifting into low cloud. Light rain and drizzle is also likely at times, especially across Cumbria, says the Met Office.
