Met Office issues yellow weather warning as heavy rain and flooding to hit Wales this weekend

Heavy rain will hit Wales this weekend with a risk of flooding as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning for most of the country.

The Met Office has forecast heavy rain for large parts of the country on Saturday night and into Sunday.

It said "persistent, heavy rain" will arrive across Wales by Saturday evening.

The rain should ease on Sunday but will be followed by "very heavy showers" in places.

The Met Office said during the weather warning many parts of Wales will see 20mm to 30mm of rain.

Forecasters said they are unsure where will see the heaviest rainfall, but there is potential for 30mm to 40mm of rain to fall within a few hours in certain places.

The warning has been issued from 6pm on Saturday to 5pm on Sunday.

They warn to expect flooding of "a few" homes and businesses, with some interruption to power supplies and other services likely.

Spray and flooding on roads is also expected making journey times longer.

Bus and train services are also expected to be affected by the adverse weather.

Ahead of the weather warning, the Met Office had already forecast widespread rain and flooding across parts of Wales.

The group's latest forecast calls for a spell of "persistent rain overnight on Saturday with frequent heavy showers on Sunday" as a storm system moves across the UK.

The downpours, which could lead to flooding and travel disruption across the country, will be enhanced by Tropical Storm Jerry in the North Atlantic.

Speaking on Wednesday, AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said: "The rain will be enhanced by moisture from Tropical Storm Jerry even though Jerry will remain out in the central North Atlantic.

"This could bring the threat for flooding. Confidence is still low at this point on where the heaviest rain will set up."
