Met Office issues yellow weather alert warning of heavy rain and possible flooding this weekend

A deluge of rain is expected to fall in Greater Manchester this weekend, with forecasters warning of potential flooding.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather alert warning of heavy and persistent rain for most of Saturday.

It is in place from 4am tomorrow until 12pm, so anybody planning outdoor activities will need some waterproof clothing.

Forecasters have said flooding of businesses and homes 'is likely', while bus and train services could also be disrupted.

Drivers are being warned of potential issues with spray and flooding on the roads, making journey times longer.

In some areas there could be 15 to 25mm of rainfall, while 40 to 50mm could be possible in hilly areas.

The heavy rain is expected to first make an appearance overnight.

There will then be a brief drier spell, but then more rain showers will arrive later on in the early of the morning.

As well as the downpours there will also be strong blustery winds.

However, temperatures will be slightly warmer compared to recent days climbing up to 10C.

A statement on the Met Office website said: "Following a spell of rain later on Friday, more persistent rain will arrive from the south early on Saturday morning and last through most of the day.

Weather forecast for the week ahead

"The rain will be heavy at times, especially on hills. 15 to 25 mm is likely to fall quite widely, with 40 to 50 mm possible over high ground.

"The rain will slowly ease and then clear from the south on Saturday evening."

By Sunday the cloud is expected to clear, but more rain is then expected to spread from start of next week and Tuesday.

Temperatures will start to pick up by the start of next week, reaching highs of 11C on Monday.
