Met Office issues yellow warning as thunderstorms set to hit the North East

The glorious weather over the last few days could be over already, with a weather warning for thunderstorms issued.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning from 6pm on Saturday that will last until midnight.

County Durham, Newcastle, Sunderland and Northumberland could all be affected by flooding and lightning strikes.

People are being warned that there could be delays to train and bus services, while driving conditions may become difficult.

It comes after temperatures in Newcastle were expected to reach around 29C on Saturday afternoon, with some cloudy periods.

The sun turned out this week for the first day of action at the Northumberland Plate Festival and visitors to the The Hoppings also basked in glorious sunshine.

On Sunday, forecasters expect it to be mainly dry in the east with sunny spells, cloudier across western hills with a few showers.

It will be "noticeable fresher" with a brisk breeze, with temperatures reaching 21C.
