Met Office issues weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain TODAY

The Met Office has issued a number of yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain across the UK today.

Lightning storms and blustery showers are set to hit parts of southern Wales and south west England from 1pm while heavy rain will lash parts of the east coast.

It comes on the final day of the Queen's Jubilee celebrations which are set to kick off at 12pm with more than 85,000 people hosting Big Jubilee Lunches across the UK.

Forecasters have warned of potential flooding and travel disruption in parts of Oxfordshire, Somerset, and along the southern coast of Wales.

A yellow thunderstorm warning has been put in place until midnight, with rain warnings for East Midlands and parts of Yorkshire and Humber.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes," the Met Office said.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life and there is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads."

Residents in these areas are also told to expect potential transport delays, difficult driving conditions, road closures and power cuts.

A yellow rain warning was also issued for parts of the east coast of England from 7pm on Sunday until 4am on Monday.

Coastal areas of Norfolk, Lincolnshire and East Riding of Yorkshire brace for heavy rain with some homes and businesses at risk of flooding.

It means some may have to get creative with ways to keep out the rain determined not to let the weather put a dampener on Sunday's Big Jubilee Lunch events.

No further weather warnings are in place for the rest of next week.

Communities countrywide will be throwing Jubilee-themed tea parties in honour of the Queen’s reign with more than 16,000 street parties set to take place.

The last event of the weekend, the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, will begin at 2.30pm in central London where the rain is expected to hold off.

Grey clouds are expected to blanket the capital during the day which is expected to become drier and brighter throughout the afternoon with highs of 17C.

After the celebrations, there is a high chance of heavy rain settling in from around 9pm.

More than 5,000 artists from the UK and the Commonwealth will parade down The Mall to Buckingham Palace for the Platinum Jubilee Pageant on Sunday.

Artists will perform tributes to the seven decades of the Queen’s reign during an almost two mile carnival procession featuring celebrities and puppets.

Sir Cliff Richard, Katherine Jenkins, Holly Willoughby, Gary Lineker, Sir Mo Farah and Professor Green are all to take part in the pageant.

A River of Hope procession will also feature with children carrying 200 silk flags, while buses for each decade of the Queen’s reign will carry some of the biggest names in British show business.

Cloudy weather is on the cards for central and southern areas of the UK on Sunday, bringing rain or showers and the risk of storms.

Brighter weather is expected in the south overall followed by scattered heavy rain.

Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain largely dry with sunny periods and warm temperatures in the west.
