Met Office issues weather warning with snow to hit North East causing 'significant disruption'

The Met Office has issued parts of the region with a yellow weather warning of snow which is expected to bring 'significant travel disruption'.

The yellow weather warning covers areas in Northumberland like Bellingham, Hexham and Rochester and will be in from midnight on Thursday until 6am on Friday.

It comes a week after Storm Christoph left behind a wake of destruction with thousands forced to flee their homes and flood warnings issued up and down the country.

The new weather warning issued states: "Heavy snowfall may occur across the hills in this region and bring significant disruption to travel."

The Met Office says residents should expect a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

There are also warnings that rural communities could be cut off as well as for power cuts and service outages.

Travellers are also urged to plan ahead as 'significant disruption to travel' for the north of England and Scotland is set to strike, when a weather warning for snow comes into force from tomorrow until 6am on Friday.

Forecasters explained: "A band of snowfall will likely push northeast into this region during the early hours of Thursday and become slow-moving.

"Snow may fall to lower elevations for a time with some locations seeing several cm by morning, however above 200 m elevation significant and prolonged snowfall is possible throughout Thursday, with the potential for 15-30cm to accumulate which may lead to transport disruption.

"Overnight into Friday snowfall will turn lighter and more patchy, and likely become restricted to elevations above 300-400 M, but may see a further 5-10 cm."

Tonight's weather forecast for the region states: "A rather cloudy and damp day, with some outbreaks of patchy light rain and drizzle at times, especially across the Pennines.

"Perhaps some clearer spells developing in the far north later. Less cold than on Tuesday. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

"A cloudy and damp night for most. However, a band of rain will slowly arrive from the southwest during the early hours, turning to snow on the hills. Cold. Minimum temperature 2 °C."
