Met Office issues weather warning for part of Wales as thunderstorms and hail forecast

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning to parts of Wales, saying disruption is likely. The warning, forecasting "slow moving, heavy showers and possible thunderstorms" was put in place overnight on Thursday, June 30, and remains in place until 9am.

The area covered by the warning includes Harlech, Barmouth, Tywyn and Pwllheli, and parts of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Forecasters say that it is "likely" residents in these areas will wake to some disruption, such as potential flooding to buildings, damage to structures and buildings and lightning strikes, power issues, and travel issues.

Issued just after midnight on Thursday, the warning reads: "Slow-moving heavy showers and possible thunderstorms will occur at first on Thursday over northwest Wales. Where these occur there is the potential for 25-50 mm of rain in a few hours along with a risk of lightning."

This is the second thunderstorm warning for Wales in the last seven days. The last warning was forecast across south Wales and England on June 23.

A yellow warning for rain has also been issued in Northern Ireland during the early hours, however, the rest of Wales should anticipate a "changeable day". The forecast reads: "A changeable day with sunshine and heavy showers, with a risk of thunderstorms and hail, moving east through the day. Much drier and clearer in the evening. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

"Showers will ease during the evening, to leave a mostly dry night with some clear spells. However there may be the odd shower in the west during the early hours. Minimum temperature 10 °C."

A yellow warning is issued which means people likely to be affected should take preventative action but the expected weather conditions are "unlikely" to pose an immediate risk to the general population.
