Met Office issues weather warning for North East as 5cm of snow is expected

The Met Office has issued a fresh weather warning for the North East.

The first snow of 2021 has hit the region and travel disruption is expected.

Up to 5cm of snow could land in some areas while temperatures plummet and it could feel as cold as -5°C.

Roads and railways are likely to be affected and journeys may take longer.

The warning will be in place until 6pm on Saturday.

It affects all areas of the North East including County Durham, Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland.

It says: "Southward-moving areas of sleet and snow are likely to give 2-5cm snow over higher ground above 200-300m whilst at lower levels snow accumulations will be smaller and patchier in nature with 1-2cm snow for some.

"Where snow falls, expect slippery pavements and tricky driving conditions."

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
