Met Office issues weather warning for Merseyside but there may be good news

Merseyside looked braced for a washout night as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning.

Forecasters predicted heavy rainfall in the region , which could lead to flooding and travel disruption.

Issuing the warning between the hours of 12am and 11.59pm today (July 31), thunderstorms were expected to batter Kirkby, Southport and other parts of Merseyside.

The Met Office said: "Heavy, persistent rain across parts of the warning area, will probably turn more showery in places by afternoon but with a higher chance of thunderstorms.

"Some parts of northern England could see as much as 40-50 mm of rain through Wednesday, while thunderstorms could produce as much as 30-40 mm in one to two hours.

"However, some places will miss the heaviest rainfall."

But despite the weather warning, it appears that Merseyside will escape the rain.

The Met Office's local forecast, which details the weather for a specific area, predicts Merseyside will bask in sunny intervals until 10pm tonight.

This includes the likes of Kirkby and Southport, which came under the weather warning.

From 10pm tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning (August 1) most places will become largely dry with some clear spells.

Last week, Merseyside saw one of the biggest thunderstorms in years after the hottest day of the year.

Plenty of people reported being woken up by the  hammering rain and thunder breaking  across the region.

While some of them made the most of being woken up by  the storm  to capture incredible pictures, others were absolutely fuming at their lack of sleep.

Some incredible photos captured across Merseyside  show what it looked like when the storm broke across the region.
