Met Office issues weather warning as thunderstorms and heavy showers forecast for UK

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The warning, which affects much of the South West and large areas of North Somerset close to Bristol, is in place from 10am until 8pm tonight (September 9).

The weather agency has warned that slow-moving heavy showers could cause travel disruption in a few places.

Bristol may just escape the worst of it, with the warning area stopping just short of the city but coming nearly as close as Portbury and Barrow Gurney.

However, the forecast for Bristol still warns of "thundery downpours" today. Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon are both in the warning zone.

Forecasters say: "Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.

"There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Delays to train services are possible.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

"Possibly some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes."

Today's forecast for Bristol reads: "Outbreaks of rain first thing will become persistent and heavy for a time this morning.

"The rain will give way to some brighter spells this afternoon, but at the same time some heavy and locally thundery downpours will develop.

"Maximum temperature 18C."
