Met Office issues weather warning as 'rain, sleet, and snow' set to sweep across Wales

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the majority of Wales and a large part of western England.

It comes as temperatures across the UK continue to dip and after much of northern England experienced heavy snow earlier this week.

The yellow weather warning for ice is in place from midnight tonight until 10am on Thursday, December 2.

Meteorologists said Wales can expect "icy stretches" developing throughout Thursday morning and people should prepare for "icy patches" to develop on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

People should be wary of the possibility of slipping and falling on icy surfaces and be mindful that some roads and railways may be affected by the icy conditions.

A statement from the Met Office said: "An area of rain, sleet and snow is expected to move south across much of Wales and parts of western England on Thursday morning.

"With temperatures falling ahead the rain, sleet and snow arriving, some icy stretches are likely to form on frozen ground.

"Whilst some snow will fall, this will be mainly on higher ground, although perhaps to lower levels for a time in the Welsh Marches and parts of the West Country. Only small amounts are expected with perhaps 1 to 2 centimetres of slushy accumulations in places."

What the Met Office said people should expect

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some roads and railways may be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
