Met Office issues weather warning ahead of torrential downpours and floods in Scotland

Torrential rain and potential flooding is expected across much of Scotland on Monday as the Met Office put a yellow weather warning in place throughout the day.

Central areas and the east coast, stretching from the border with England right to the top of the country, will be subject to heavy downpours.

It was originally thought Scotland would be hit with thunderstorms like large some of the rest of the UK but the weather warning has now been changed to encompass the torrential rainfall.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures and some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

"There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses, associated with the isolated thunderstorm risk."
